Group 5: Aesthetics

Mariana Burns-Bernier; Getsemani Fragoso; Alexander Huynh

General definitions:

Baumgarten defined beauty as “phenomenal perfection, and the importance of this, in thinking about art, was that it placed a predominant stress through the apprehension of the word senses” (p. 31)

The conditions of sensuous perceptions – Our senses is what creates the aesthetic (what we see, feel, touch, hear)

Commonly used to refer to questions of visual appearance and effect – What people see and how that creates an effect

Abstract science of feeling – Aesthetics would be seen as an objective thing, but it is more subjective

Way it relates to other terms:

Aesthetics has specialized reference towards art. There is a distinction between art and beauty, like there is a distinction between society and culture.

Aesthetics relates to dialectic in that everyone has their own opinion on what they believe to be “beautiful”

Games are a form of digital art that we can apprectiate it and put ourselves inside the game rather than just look at the art. It is a form of interactive design.

How it relates to course concepts:

Antonelli referred to an interaction of design and games are the purest form of interaction. When they look at a game, they care about time, space, behavior, and aesthetics. They look at the aesthetics of a game to determine if the game should be part of the collection. Design is the greatest form of creative expression. How you design the game is what makes the aesthetics of the game.

The aesthetics of a game dictate whether we’re gonna keep playing a game. If the aesthetics of a game stand out, it will keep you interested (Koster) Aesthetic training?

Art as something that you’re trained to appreciate. Can we be trained to appreciate games? If you start playing games enough and have people reinforcing the aesthetics of the game, you will be more appreciative of the game and probably enjoy it more

Are video games aesthetics or art? What is the purpose of games? – It is difficult to determine what games can be classified as as many people do not believe they can be classified as art. But, do the aesthetics of the game make it art?

Games are a form of digital art that we can appreciate it and put ourselves inside the game rather than just look at the art. It is a form of interactive design. As a digital form of art it is still aesthetically pleasing.

How can we see it at play within games that we have seen so far:

The Path: It was a very visually appealing game. The look of it brought you in and made you want to play. It can be classified as a beautiful game in terms of visual perception.

The Wolf Among Us: Even though it is a more reaction-based game, the art style is visually appealing and interesting.

Pac-Man: Pac-Man has very bright colors and it draws people to play this yellow round thing to collect the pellets. It’s a very simplistic game, but it is visually appealing.

Gone Home: The game Gone Home is about finding your missing family. It’s a very simplistic game, but the visual part is very realistic. The realism of the game is what makes the game aesthetically pleasing. Many people want a game to be realistic because the realism is what they find to be beautiful.

Katamari Damacy: A very crazy and abstract game, but very colorful and bright, making it aesthetically pleasing. If you put a bunch of colors together, it makes it interesting and people will want to play it because of the aesthetics of color, sound, and abstract shapes.
