Konami: Developers or Designers?

unnamed-2

Yu-Gi-Oh, the memories playing this game as a kid are timeless. As a kid I had to collect all my favorite cards just to impress my friends, now in 2017 here I am downloading the mobile game Yu-Ghi-Oh Duel Links by Konami onto my iPhone. The gameplay is smooth and challenges to unlock characters and gain xp points to level up was a very nice touch.

I believe that Konami is the artist behind this mobile game. They are a brand that has been aking Yu-Ghi-Oh the game it is today and it is a group of developers who have been putting out nothing but great content for many years across many platforms. I firmly believe that Konami is almost on the same level as Nintendo when it comes to game development. The many stages and levels and creative mind work that Konami has put into the making of the game really show when looking at the many different creatures that can be summoned by the Yu-Ghi-Oh cards. These characteristics are so intense; I don’t think that I could ever come up with any of these characters. Just by looking at the way that gameplay works and the story develops it is hard to say that the work that this developing team puts into making these games does not show, I was fascinated how intense the gameplay is with the addition of the music during the gameplay has definitely won over my decision making.

Another intriguing factor is the way that you can unlock characters to better play and use better and more powerful cards to win a lot more battles and progress more in games. Another point in the gameplay that stood out to me during the gameplay that made sure I considered this game art is the way that these battles work. They make gameplay a hundred and ten percent more interesting is the way that these characters and moves slash all over the screen every time you make a move it’s almost like the intensity of the game is blowing up in your face which is probably my favorite part of game play. “…the strategy of contemporary arts consists in creating…new and interesting even if this form was already created before” (Appropration 27) The way that these games are made are most likely the same way just improved and better because the story line is the same storyline and characters are almost the same as the past games the newer version is just made more modern which in my opinion is a great idea to keep characters the same because it works out so well. I personally have to agree with Stockburger in the way that this game sticks to the original product except the changes that are used to attempted to modernize the game and make it easier for people in this generation to easily access it on their personal phones, whether its android or iPhone it is a great game to play and I personally have to consider the developers at Konami artists.

  1. How are developers and designers different? Usually, the developer designs or even the designer develops the game. I suppose one could argue that a developer is the one who publishes the game, but this is simply the publisher, and not the developer.

As someone who thinks Yu-Ghi-Oh is a bad card game, I am curious to know why a campaign within the game drew you to the game. Does this not make for an even more linear game?

  2. Like lfaiola13, I’m confused about the disjunction between your title and your blog post. When I began reading, I assumed you were making a meaningful distinction between the “developer,” Konami, and some other “designer.” However, I see no other ‘designer’ being posited. What happened to the manga’s creator, Kazuki Takahashi? Wouldn’t he be the one coming up with the creatures and characteristics you make note of? And when you refer to Konami, are you referring to the people who made the card game, or the ones who turned that into a video game? There is a lot of detail that you aren’t really getting into with this ‘game.’

  3. Going through your whole blog, your argument was not really clear. I felt that you lagged actually choosing a side in the argument.
